Leeds is a music city!

December 2018

December in Leeds this year proves itself once more as the time and the place to be for music, by a diverse Quality Street box-full of artists for everyone to enjoy. Not much compares to the experience of enjoying sensational musical performances with your favourite tipple in hand, and with a dear one by your side when its dark and dreary outside – especially when it’s the likes of Mumford and Sons, Madness, Mariah Carey, MGMT, and Razorlight!

Mumford & Sons

Mumford1st December 2018

Starting the month off in true hygge style is our favourite banjo-wielding, beard-donned dudes from down South! Yes, Mumford and Sons First Direct Arena as part of their international Delta tour. The album of the same name, which was released on the 16th of November, is said to be an experimental fusion of their earlier work (who must claim some responsibility for bringing beards back to social consciousness) with an ambitious attitude that is demanded of stadium-hosted gigs.

You may have seen the monochrome music video for Guiding Light which beautifully captures M&F fans enjoying the song, belting it out alongside Marcus, and sets the scene for what is likely to be a unifying great-big-family affair.

Madness6th December 2018

Next up we have The Sound of Madness. Not to be confused with the Shinedown track, this is the title of Madness’ new album which they are currently touring across the UK. Coming to Leeds on the 6th of December at First Direct Arena, Suggs and his boys are promising ‘great drumming with a load of old nonsense on top’ (unsurprisingly quoted by Madness drummer Woody Woodgate), which may be just what you’re after if nothing makes your heart sing like Baggy Trousers or Our House.

All of the greatest hits along with cult classics, there’s nothing like a bit of Madness on a stage to offset the ilk of shopping centres, Santa-crazed kids, and expectant in-laws.

Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey10th December 2018

All 42 The Calls Hotel wants for Christmas is a Mariah Carey comeback tour although she never really went away, especially if you listen to any radio station anywhere in December. Caution is the name of her latest album she’s touring with at the moment, which has been received to critical acclaim all around the world.

With bangers including GTFO, With You, and A No No on the setlist, Leeds’ First Direct Arena is lucky to be one of the many pitstops she will be performing at. Tickets are likely to sell out quicker than caution can be thrown to the wind, so we wouldn’t hang around if we were you!

16th December 2018

You’d be forgiven for forgetting who MGMT are as their most recent work Little Dark Age is the first album they’ve released for five years. Most famous for Kids, Electric Feel, and Time to Pretend, their latest offering does not disappoint with an electronic experience that will take you right back to your 80’s high school disco but infused with the contemporary edgy pop vibes of the present day.

Their music likely formed part of the soundtrack of your summer ten years ago, but there’s no harm in reigniting those MGMT-exclusive dance moves for a Wintertime boogie at the o2 Academy on the 16th of December.

Razorlight18th December 2018

Coming to the o2 Academy on the 18th December with their latest album Olympus Sleeping, Razorlight will be once more gracing the Leeds’ stage with the epitome of the indie-rock genre. Unlike many of their casually coiffed peers that emerged a decade ago who have since gone to ground, Razorlight have faithfully returned to the recording studio after a seven year-long hiatus.

The upbeat and youthful tracks of their latest work, notably Carry Yourself and Japanrock, demonstrate that Johnny and the band clearly haven’t lost sight of what their fans have always liked about Razorlight – something that’s a bit too cool for pop but not so affected as heavier rock genres. Not to mention, the o2 Academy is the ideal venue for these guys, known for their gigs and club-nights that specifically appeal to indie boppers. In other words, you’re guaranteed a good time!
