A new year has dawned but Leeds doesn’t wait around, languishing about from last month’s feasts and frolics, and is dependable as always in providing quality music entertainment for the people. Since January is all about starting anew, it is a great thing to be inspired and there’s no better way to do that than with music, particularly when it’s live. As Plato said, ‘Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.’

The darker the shadow the brighter the light part two is the guise under which Mike Skinner has been releasing new tracks for the past year, but also the title of The Streets’ reunion tour. By popular demand, the tour has been extended into 2019 and is coming to the O2 Academy on the 22nd of January for a revisiting of our favourite tunes, including from the oldie-but-goodie Original Pirate Material album all the way through to their ultimate release Computers and Blues.
The unique sound of Skinner’s unapologetic Brummie rapping over a real mix of beats and interesting nods to other genres including bassline and classical, hip-hop fans will be chomping at the bit for the opportunity to get there, even if just to belt out Fit But You Know It.

We love a Yorkshire band at 42 The Calls Hotel and so we’re delighted that Random Hand are back on tour again, passing through Leeds at Brudenell Social Club on the 25th of January. For those that enjoy a good-ol’ mosh to ska-punk, these Keighley lads know how to party and have a lot of foot-stompers to deliver throughout their set, notably Not a Number, Anger Management and of course BONES.

The Wombats are showcasing their latest work Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life on tour across Europe and they’ll be coming to Leeds at First Direct Arena on the 26th of January. This, their fourth album, represents the grown-up indie rock that many of us have seen evolve from the initial Noughtie’s breakthrough which for The Wombats saw their rise with the highly angsty but clever and funny, A Guide to Loss, Love and Desperation.
Similar to related acts such as The Arctic Monkeys and Snow Patrol (see below) their popularity has developed as such that they have reached stadium stage status which is no mean feat, so you can enjoy their latest Lemon to a Knife Fight and also the classic Let’s Dance to the Joy Division in a breath-taking atmosphere.

This is the event of the month we have been looking forward to the most at 42 The Calls Hotel: Snow Patrol are coming to Leeds’ First Direct Arena on the 29th of January! As part of their enormous international tour, Wildness promises to be a transcendental experience that poignantly reflects on what is important amongst the uncertain times of our busy world. Life on Earth, Don’t Give In, and Empress are all epic to listen to and will shine even brighter on the FDA stage.
Did you know that 42 The Calls Hotel are running a competition offering the chance for one lucky person to win two tickets to see the Snow Patrol show? Check out our social media for more information on how to enter!

Bringing the month to a close with fabulous style, John Grant will be taking to the stage at the O2 Academy on the 30th of January to kick off the UK leg of his global tour, sprinkling the Love is Magic joy all over the place. For anyone that has seen the album cover (John gawping up at a studio mic in his pants, covered in feathers and with a bird cage on his head) will know that Grant isn’t afraid to push boundaries and experiment with new sounds.
The video-game infused theatrics of this multi-instrumental extravaganza will provide an evening you’re unlikely to forget for a long time, making it well worth the ticket price – just don’t surprised if you find glitter in your socks when you get home!
