23rd February 2018
In 2017, The Jam’s In The City turned 40, marking the anniversary of the band’s bursting into the British mainstream. But rather than rejoicing the occasion in raucous rockstar fashion, Paul Weller will celebrate how he knows best: by releasing a new studio album and embarking on a UK Arena tour. Because that’s what The Modfather does.
Latest release A Kind of Revolution was Weller’s 13th studio album as a solo artist, and 25th overall, which in true changingman fashion unveiled an eclectic blend of rock, jazz, soul and folk. Achieved with the recruitment of soul legends P.P. Arnold and Madeline Bell; alongside The Strypes’ Josh McClorey, Boy George and Robert Wyatt.
Accordingly, on the evenings you can expect to hear critically-acclaimed hits from the album, like the string-laden-funk of She Moves With The Fayre, and The Cranes Are Back – a soulful ballad, already considered among Paul Weller’s most beautiful works. But of course, any evening with Paul Weller is defined by his extensive back catalogue – as you embark on an epic rollercoaster ride of emotion, with euphoric Jam anthems like A Town Called Malice and That’s Entertainment. Smoothed out with soulful Style Council numbers like You’re The Best Thing and Shout To The Top. Bolstered yet further with solo ballads like You Do Something To Me and The Changingman – which barely begins to scratch the surface on one of music’s heftiest arsenals!
Now as Weller approaches 60, he’s showing no signs of slowing down, playing epic three hour sets every time he steps on stage. Filled with all of his biggest hits from across his 45 year reign as the High Priest of Mod, which will very much be the case upon his return to Leeds’ First Direct Arena, this February!
24th February 2018
As one musical legacy died with the disbanding of The Jam in 1982, another was begun in the same year, when Steven Patrick Morrissey rose to prominence as frontman of The Smiths. Though like The Jam before them, Marr and Morrissey’s Indie Rock outfit would meet a premature end, disbanding just five years later in 1987.
The aftermath, however, was not entirely bleak; with Morrissey embarking on a successful solo career, which has since seen all ten of his releases land in the Top 10 UK Album Chart, including three No. 1’s! So what can we expect as the undisputed king of bedroom melodrama prepares to release 11th studio album, Low In High School? Well according to whispers within the music industry, a lot. Which bodes well for Moz’s UK Arena tour!
From Low In High School, we’ve already been treated to catchy comeback single Spent The Day In Bed – where even a music video of Morrissey being pushed around in a wheelchair by Joey Barton, could not detract from the songs likeability. Fans were also able to listen to an exclusive performance by Moz at Maida Vale, where we heard new track Jacky’s Only Happy When She’s Up on the Stage – boasting a soaring chorus not heard since First Of The Gang To Die.
So on the evening, you can expect to see a Morrissey back to his brilliant best – displaying an incomparable talent for combining underlying political agendas with harmonious, flowing melody; as showcased in ageless anthems like Suedehead, Everyday Is Like Sunday, Speedway and The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get. Who knows? We may even be treated to a Smiths classic or two!
He may be one of music’s most contrary characters, but he’s also one of Britain’s greatest writers, with a gift for colliding big ideas and beautiful melodies, delivered in a style which is distinctly Morrissey. One thing you won’t want to do this February, is spend the day in bed.
